At RLE Law we are proud to be supporting Dementia Action Week 19-25 May 2025 to raise awareness of the importance of early diagnosis. Diagnosis is vital to give people access to the care, treatment and support they desperately need. Incredibly, 1 in 3 people in the UK living with dementia do not have a diagnosis. Symptoms include memory loss, difficulty organising thoughts, problems communicating, problems with vision, getting confused and changes in mood. I am a Trainee Solicitor in the Private Client department at RLE Law dealing with wills, powers of attorney and court of protection work. It is essential for me to be able to recognise any signs and symptoms that may affect a persons’ ability to make decisions and also be able to deal with clients who are vulnerable or incapacitated in a very sensitive and empathetic way. To support this, I am always keen to undertake any extra training.
One of the most useful training sessions that I have recently undertaken is the Dementia Friends Training with the Alzheimer’s Society which has changed my perception of Dementia. As a firm we had pledged to train all staff as Dementia Friends to raise awareness of Dementia and strengthen our skills in dealing with vulnerable and incapacitated clients. This training has given invaluable insight on the action I can take to make accessing our service much easier, but also help me in everyday life. It has equipped me with the knowledge to ensure I am being respectful and mindful of an individual’s needs when suffering with Dementia, and how I can support them.
I am proud to say I am now a Dementia Friend, along with other colleagues in the department. Dementia Action Week (19-25 May 2025) is all about taking action and raising awareness of Dementia. We are hoping to raise awareness throughout the week by inviting staff members and clients attending our offices to wear Dementia-friendly colours:
Purple: This is the official colour of Alzheimer’s Society. The colour purple creates a calming effect for individuals with Dementia.
Green: The colour green reduces activity in the nervous system, it encourages individuals to remain calm. It increases memory for positive words. The colour green is also symbolic of life and growth.
Blue: The colour blue helps lower blood pressure by making the room feel bigger and cooler.
Yellow/Orange: Bright colours such as different shades of yellow and orange promote individual happiness and positivity.
Red: Red increases brain activity.
